Location

Put simply, The Amari Emerald Cove is the best hotel on the Island of Koh Chang, but to leave it at that doesn’t do this resort justice. The positioning on the beach with Chang’s lush mountains as a back drop is breathtaking, and the views out into the gulf of Thailand from your beach hammock are scintillating.

There’s something for everyone here. Try one of the Suites for your honeymoon, elephant trekking for the more adventurous or a soak in a herbal bath before a relaxing massage at The Sivara Spa.

It’s hard to believe they managed to so far avoid an airport being built on one of the largest islands in Thailand and the halting of mass tourism here is the other main attraction. Koh Chang showcases Thailand’s larger untouched islands which are ecologically unspoilt and will now remain so with responsible tourism upheld by this boutique luxury chain.

Rooms

There are 3 main room types – Superior (50m2), Deluxe (50m2) and 7 Suites (106m2) and they are all decorated in fresh colours and modern Thai furniture with beautiful solid wood flooring.

All rooms have balconies or a terrace of around 10m2, with either mountain vistas (superior) or ocean view (deluxe). There are slightly larger corner rooms of 56m2 in both these categories.

Spa

Run by Sivara, the quality and ambience here mirrors the standard in other Amari properties, particularly the Amari Vogue in Krabi.

The treatment rooms are enclosed but next to the beach and with large windows giving views of the sea, with palm trees swaying overhead. Good Spas always create the right atmosphere and Sivara welcomes you with aromas of ylang ylang, lavender and marjoram, immediately putting you in the right frame of mind for treatment. Therapies on offer include Thai massage, mind relaxing massage and some body wraps and scrubs good enough to eat incorporating ingredients such as chocolate, wasabi, lavender and honey.

Watching the palms swaying from your massage bed with the sound of the sea lapping the shore, a deep sleep is never far away leaving you totally unwound.

Dining

As is common with Amari properties, they have a specific love of Italian food and have a dedicated restaurant here also. Open in the evenings, enjoy some Italian classics and fine dining in the very chic air-conditioned environs of Sassi.

For all day dining, including your extensive breakfast, visit The Cove. Serving international dishes and also hosting themed buffets, there is something for everyone here.

The third main eatery serves purely local fayre and is aptly named “Just Thai”.

There are also poolside snacks and drinks available, specialist dining options for those romantics and for your sundowners, Breezes Bar.

Other Activities

50 metre main pool, children’s pool, diving, other water sports, games room and boat trips to other islands.

Final Word

Sometimes when you discover the best islands and beaches, you’re left scratching around for a beach hut or building your own bivouac.

Not so on Koh Chang where you can find tropical paradise, elephants and other stunning islands very close by before retiring to luxury surroundings and food at the Amari. If you want to see a genuinely untouched Thai island without slumming it, then this resort is a great place to come and explore.
