Location
Perched on a hillside with uninterrupted views in every direction, Baan Taling Ngam is a classic Thai design oozing class and a minimum standard that is way beyond most other 5* hotels, without the premium.
Whilst most rooms command positions on the hillside, this is a beach resort and for those wanting direct beach access, they afford that option with their 7 beach villas. Baan Taling demonstrates, for those in any doubt, that Koh Samui has a plush side and various luminaries such as Liz Taylor have visited these hallowed steps and it is easy to see why.
Rooms
The resort's lead in rooms demonstrate the incredible value for money offered here with a huge 67m 2 as standard with a balcony commanding some of the best views we've seen from any hotel bedroom.
The bathrooms are fairly palatial also with separate shower room, plunge pool/ Jacuzzi style baths and an independent toilet closed off. Room features, include SAT TV, DVD players, stereo, A/C and mini-bar. There are 2 room categories/ sizes – Deluxe and Suites but the Deluxe rooms have differing views. We thoroughly recommend paying the small premium for the sea view rooms which also have large balconies with sun loungers.
Villas
Unlike a lot of properties with Villas, they form the majority of the rooms here and range from 1-3 bedrooms, but are predominantly 2 bedrooms. Most are built over 2 levels and again in classical Thai style on the interior, with large living areas and balconies and the majority with private en-suite for each bedroom.
These are an excellent option for a family or anyone looking for some real space to spread out in. They are built around no less than 5 different pools so you are never far from the water. If you want to go to the beach, you simply call a golf buggy to collect you.
Spa
After the hotel became independent from Meridien, they embarked on a strict training program for all the spa therapists and rigorous training and experimenting are still the order of the day. The 4 treatment rooms are all “rooms with a view” and are all self contained with their own shower rooms, toilets and changing areas. The therapy range is excellent, from traditional Thai massage to ancient Egyptian reflexology, body wraps and a special section concentrating on skin and body treatments using the very high quality BIODROGA cosmetic range.
There are programs and packages for those who want to indulge heavily in the spa and feel $1 million when they leave and the speciality herbal baths are an excellent add on to any of the treatments you may take.
Dinner
Lom Talay and the Promenade (main building and beach respectively) provide the bulk of the eating opportunities but there are plans for another restaurant down at the beach and private dining in villas or at exotic beach locations can be arranged. The quality of the food at breakfast, lunch and dinner is as you would expect from a resort of this class, but you will find some imaginative alternative fusion cuisine, particularly at night down at the promenade where US chef Nick will delight you such delicacies as blue swimmer crab fish cakes and Duck with rare fungi mushrooms.
Other Facilities
The resorts facilities go beyond the normal. As a start they have kayaking and sailing as well as amazing scuba diving options being located opposite Ang Thong Marine Park . There are 2 main pools, 1 up at reception level and another down at the beach, aside to the 5 that cater for the villas. Add to that a pool room, tailor on site, sauna, gym, tennis courts (floodlit) table tennis, mountain bikes plus a golf net and putting green and there is something for everyone here.
There are of course excursions around the island and to the neighbouring islands of Koh PhanGan and Koh Tao, amongst many smaller ones.
Final Word
Few resorts have the space and views that Baan Taling possesses and when you add in all the other components, this really is one of the most complete beach resorts in the country. As with many great resorts it is the staff that make a good resort into an excellent one and here you have a winning team from the award winning bar tender, the head chef and guest relations manager, right to the top of the tree with a general manager who understands the expectations of customers who want great service in a relaxed environment.
The cream on the cake is the sunsets which are absolutely amazing. Come to Baan Taling Ngam for these alone and you will not be disappointed.
