Intro
Most resorts in the Maldives have a comprehensive marine activity offering but Four Seasons Landaa Giravaru is really a mecca for scuba divers and anyone interested in Marine biology.
The Four Seasons brand is well known around the world and this, the 2nd of their Maldivian ventures, is right up there with the pick of the bunch, not least because of the island’s far end which is a beautiful long strip of sand bank that disappears effortlessly into the shallow turquoise waters.
Rooms:-
Probably the most notable point about the rooms versus other resorts is the huge size of the beach villas. The room size is 137m2 and then there is a whopping 260m2 of outdoor space which is cleverly divided to provide dining, relaxation and poolside amenities. The rooms have very high ceilings and are afforded all the usual facilities you would expect from a 5* brand such as Four Seasons, but with the added bonus of enormous bathrooms with double vanity basins, closed off bath and toilet and separate rainfall shower. The pools are a decent 12 metres in length and the upper relaxation area is a nice touch also, with views out to sea while you kick back on your day bed. The beach really couldn’t be closer with a 20 metre walk from your door to the ocean and your private beach loungers.
For us, these are the pick of the rooms here . None will disappoint and the larger over water suites are very palatial, a lot of them west facing for a stunning sunset.
Dining
With 4 restaurants and 3 bars, there is little chance of becoming bored with cuisine here. The highlight for us was Blu which has the position overlooking the long spit of sand at the western end of the island. The menu has a heavy Japanese and fish accent to it and the food was almost as sensational as Japanese Kaiseki which is saying something, as this (in our humble opinion) is the pinnacle of world cuisine.
Al Barakat serves Arabian fayre while for a more international feel you should head for café Landaa which also has specialist Asian and Indian food.
Fuego Grill offers fresh seafood and prime meat for those of a carnivorous nature!
Spa:
This is one of the few resorts in the world (outside of India) to offer a full Ayurvedic program along side more western massage therapies. It is very spacious and offers a variety of rooms, some partially outdoors, some over water and some in a garden setting. The combination of these 2 healing practices side by side is very rare and a great opportunity to try something new that has been proven to benefit over many centuries.
Other
As mentioned, the Marine Centre here is akin to something you’d find on the film set of “The Deep” or “The Abyss”, the centre teaming with expert marine biologists. They really take conservation seriously here, and rather than just talking a good game they take direct action by growing new coral around the resort and re-introducing/ conserving the marine life, particularly manta rays and whale sharks, which they are leading the way on with their pioneering research. There is a lot of emphasis for getting the children involved so this is a centre for all to get involved in, not just serious adult divers.
Aside from this, there is a large infinity pool, gym, tennis, windsurfing, catamaran sailing, water skiing, parasailing, banana and tube rides, as well as the PADI dive centre which is very well equipped.
Finally, the resort is very child friendly and the Kuda Velaa kids club runs for 4-12 year olds, with various activities including nature walks and fish feeding.
Final word
If you’re looking for a very well equipped resort with large rooms and an emphasis on marine life, then the Four Seasons will be right up your street. Anyone with children can feel very at ease with bringing them here but at the same time, the island is very large (for the Maldives!) and if you want peace and quiet you will find it as the plots are so huge. In short, one of the best, if not the best, all round 5* resort in the area.
