Opened in 1936, the Imperial Delhi still stands as Delhi’s leading heritage hotel. It’s imposing white façade, in art deco masonry, and its 24 king palm trees that line the driveway as you enter the drop off arch, give the feeling of entering somewhere very special.

The interior is beautifully decorated with antiques, original paintings, lithographs, engraving and other artefacts.

We particularly like the arcade style, a la Burlington Arcade Regent Street, off which all the hotel’s other facilities lead making it easy to find everything, and there is a lot to find.

The eating and dining options are the most extensive in town meaning you will never need to leave the hotel and frankly, you wouldn’t want to.

Rooms:- Total – 233

Room types in order

Deco Rooms, Imperial Rooms, Heritage Rooms, Grand Heritage Rooms, Heritage Suites, Deco Suites, Deco Suites.

Individual Suites:-  Viceroy, Emily Eden, Hodges Suite, Lutyen’s Suite,

Royal Imperial Suite.

All the rooms are a decent size but we recommend starting with the Heritage Rooms. All the rooms are furnished with Italian marble flooring or art deco parque wood floors, white linens and Burmese teak and rosewood.

Facilities in the rooms include: Satellite TV, climate control, mini-bar, DVD player, 24 hour room service and tea and coffee making facilities.

As you go up the room categories they become fairly spectacular in size and specification, suites affording Bang & Olufsen equipment and floor areas from 1,000 – 3,000 square feet.

Dining:

As mentioned, the food and beverage possibilities are extensive.

Starting with the award winning “Spice Route”, which offers cuisine following the old spice routes so you can taste Thai, Indian, Malay, Indonesian and Chinese under one roof.

1911 Restaurant offers multi cuisine throughout the day, starting with a sumptuous breakfast.

Daniell’s Tavern offers Pan-Asian with live music. An homage to the Daniell brothers who travelled to India along part of the spice route in 1786 to do landscape painting of the country.

Sam Gimignano, another award winner, offers fine Italian fayre in an al fesco setting.

La Baguette – French patisserie to die for.

The Atrium provides tea and light snacks.

There are also 2 bars – 1911 Bar and Patiala Peg which commemorates the Maharaja’s team’s victory over the Viceroys in a game of tent pegging in 1900.

The Imperial Delhi would be a 1-2 night stop on a 10+day tour of Rajasthan/ India. The total cost of such a package in similar hotels would be c. £2,500 per person including flights, transport, guides and entrance fees.
