Location

If you’re looking for proper 2 storey holiday villas with pools and a full resort service then The Village on Coconut Island is the place.

Coconut Island is a sizeable but virtually uninhabited palm fringed paradise just off the east coast of Phuket and benefits from very sheltered conditions and stunning views of the other Andaman islands.

In the great year round sea conditions, with much less swell than the open west side of Phuket, water sports are the number one distraction here and there are daily trips to the equally stunning Rang Yai Island.

Rooms

The resort consists of 2, 3, 4 and 5 bedroom Villas, all with their own private pools and all of them are detached and with ground and first floor.

All the rooms, even the secondary bedrooms, are very generous and the master bedrooms are all enormous, with palatial bathrooms to match, finished in marble and floor to ceiling tiling everywhere.

2 bedroom villas start at an interior area of 157m2, 3-bed at 254m2, 4-bed between 250-300m2 and the 5 bedroom villas are 326m2. The total plot areas range from 400 – 1,000m2.

All the villas have open plan living areas with a large kitchen decked out with good quality appliances and gadgets. These open out onto decking and a 10-12 meter swimming pool with the beach front units having uninterrupted views to the sand very close by. Upstairs you will find en-suite bathrooms in all villas and the masters all have a great ocean facing balcony overlooking the pool.

All villas feature: 10-12 metre swimming pools, Flat screen TV/ DVD with satellite in all living rooms and master bedrooms, Wi-fi, daily maid service, air-conditioning, fully equipped European kitchens, dining area, outside dining, sun loungers and umbrellas.

Spa

The Tamarind Spa offers everything from an invigorating local Thai massage to a body scrub or pedicure. The prices at this spa are the most reasonable we have seen at a 5* resort in Asia for a long time so there really is no excuse not to indulge yourself. The 2 hour packages are particularly good value and we recommend an aromatherapy massage followed by a foot massage – relaxation heaven.

Treatments can also be taken outside and in your villa.

Dining

The Tamarind restaurant, with its commanding views of Phang Nga Bay and its islands, serves breakfast lunch and dinner with a high degree of excellence and inventiveness. Breakfast items are an oft overlooked element in hotel restaurants, but not here. Try the coconut granola muesli freshly made on site from the local bananas, coconuts and other locally grown and dried fruits.

Enjoy western or Thai snacks for lunch and other heartier fayre and for dinner anything from Thai to Peking duck, or brie kway teow noodles with basil or bacon-wrapped prawns. Whatever your taste, the dining here definitely hits the spot.

Should you want to spread your culinary wings, there are plenty of good restaurants on Phuket to try, both in Phuket and in other locations, notably Mom Tri’s Boathouse on Kata Beach or nearer the resort in Phuket Marina (12 minutes door to door), Watermark, Skippers and Limoncello.

Other Activities

Tennis courts (April 2010), 500m private beach, Spa, 24 hour free transfer to and from mainland (4 minutes by speedboat), free non motorised sports such as hobbie cats and kayaks, other water sports, delicatessen, laundry.

Final Word

For genuine villa accommodation on a deserted island, it doesn’t get better than this. On arrival your fridge will be filled with your order of essential items you never like to be without, a great touch. Add to that a resort environment where all the usual facilities of a beach resort are on tap, great staff and high standard accommodation and you have a base for an excellent long stay holiday whether you’re a family or a couple looking for some intimate villa accommodation.
