Location
Kamalaya is fast becoming the luxury health resort of choice for those not looking for a boot camp. Here you can unwind in a tropical landscape with all the tools for a detox at your finger tips but if you choose not to, you can simply view this as a luxury beach resort with a great spa.
It's actually very easy to get into the vibe here and they make it effortless to be healthy, providing healthy but inspiring cuisine that would not be out of place in a top quality restaurant. That's the secret here – healthy doesn't have to be boring and if you want a glass of wine with dinner then be their guest.
Rooms
There are essentially 4 room types here – Hillside Rooms, Suites, Villas and Pool Villas thought there are variations in these, with slightly different layouts, positions and views.
In line with the resorts feel and ambience, the rooms are lightly decorated in flowing white and cream colours. You'll find all mod cons here including air-conditioning, fridge, stereo and safe. The only gadget you won't find is a TV as this is a “no news, no shoes” type of resort, although there is the possibility to borrow a TV to view a DVD, again demonstrating their desire to make people feel at home. The rooms start at 35m2 and go up to a sizeable 215m 2 for some of the villas.
Spa
With the majority of guests taking a spa program plan daily, its no surprise to find 29 treatment rooms in this expansive spa that covers a wide range of treatments, some of which are for pure relaxation and rejuvenation, others being more intensive treatments of an Ayurvedic nature which produce life changing benefits.
The Spa facilities are conveniently located equidistant from most rooms and villas and include hot and cold plunge pools, steam rooms and even an ancient monk's cave in which to meditate. (It was this cave, abandoned in the 70's, which convinced the founder of Kamalaya that this was the location for the resort, himself having lived in such a cave as a monk for many years in India. Surely too much of a coincidence).
Dining
There are 2 dining options at Kamalaya, the first, “Soma”, toward the top of the resort and the 2 nd , “Amrita Cafe”, down towards the beach and by the pool. Both are dedicated to serving healthy (largely meat free) cuisine but for those wanting a lamb chop or chicken, you will find options here to satisfy all palates along with plenty of fish and shellfish. The food really is excellent and when healthy food tastes this good, who needs the junk. We guarantee that if you had the luxury of a full time chef there's no question you would eat like this all the time.
Other Activities
Aside to the swimming pool, the beach is very quaint, there's a library (with a TV for those who really cannot keep their eye off the news), a gym, kayaking, dinghy sailing, cookery classes and scuba diving, all available on or very near the resort.
Final Word
Kamalaya has achieved the perfect balance of health and relaxation in a beach resort, solving a problem for a lot of people who are frazzled, definitely in need of a de-stress holiday but were not quite sure what, or how deep, the physical therapy should be. Kamalaya is such a flexible resort that you can tailor it to your needs and every effort is made to make all guests comfortable, whether they are there for serious weight loss or stress relief or simply to relax for a week with a book, booking the odd massage on an ad hoc basis. Add to that its beach position in the quiet south of the island and you have the perfect blend of beach haven and health resort at excellent value for money.
