Location

It’s almost impossible to describe this hotel and really convey the true quality of its architecture, features and location. There are 5 room types, and the most basic (1 bedroom suite) would embarrass many Western 5* properties. Starting at 90m2, all the rooms face east for sunrise over the mountains and have their own balconies with day beds. The rooms then progress to 2 bedroom suite, 1 + 2 bedroom courtyard villas, finishing finally with the Presidential suite, where indeed the President of Taiwan does stay when he visits.

Rooms

The contemporary design of the rooms is unique and like nothing else we've ever seen. They are fairly minimalist but still maintain a certain warmth and certainly provide a high degree of comfort with their huge beds and day beds to accompany them. The facilities in the rooms are no less impressive featuring Bose stereos amongst the standard (for a hotel of this calibre these days) DVD wide screen TV and wireless internet.. The villas are more of the same, just bigger and better, stretching to a colossal 900m2 for the 2 bedroom courtyard pool villa.

Considering its location and size (96 rooms total), the hotel has a wide range of dining options of a quality you'd be hard pushed to find in London. There is the Oriental Brasserie, the Japanese Restaurant and the Lakeview Chinese restaurant taking care of the bulk of the cuisine on offer, but there is also the Chinese Tea House and Lobby Lounge and Bar for lighter snacks, or you can take lunch by the 60 metre long swimming pool – Taiwan's longest.

Spa

The Spa at the Lalu surpasses most in terms of its chic style and contemporary design. Combine that, the skill of the practitioners and the amazing views of the lake that you get from almost every point on the Spa, and you have a very special place in which to relax. The warm, hot and cold plunge pools perched near the edge of the hotel, high up, are a great place to gaze out over the lake from. They have created a truly magical Spa here and everything about it works brilliantly.

Nearby places of interest include Lalu island, a place of ancestral worship once occupied by the Shao Aboriginal Tribe. Take a boat here and perhaps try catching the prized President fish on the way as fishing trips can be easily arranged. Hiking the Maolin Trail, visiting Tsuen Pagoda or the Aboriginal Cultural Village are just a few of the activities on offer if by any chance you ever felt like leaving the luxurious surroundings of this hotel.

You'll probably only visit a place like the Lalu once in your life and it is so unique in many ways, we highly recommend staying here for a long period of time, or failing that, fit it in at the end of a tour and make it the most exquisite finish to a holiday
ever.
