Location
We like unique places and Vil Uyana is certainly that. Its contemporary bungalows on stilts occupy 3 different habitats which are all part of the natural habitat. It is very much an eco resort but also affords 5* facilities and luxury.
The hotel was designed by Geoffrey Bawa and from the moment you step into the stunning entrance, the whole hotel has a smooth, luxurious feel to it. As well as the sea, the hotel boasts one of Asia’s largest swimming pools. There is also tennis, squash and table tennis for those not keen to spa.
Rooms
The 3 key rooms types are over water, paddy/ marsh and forest and each type is slightly different despite their outwardly similar appearance.
There are 3 rooms of the lead in category which are the Water Dwellings, stilted rooms over a lake which have balconies. The Paddy and Marsh Dwellings are the same size but have a plunge pool and more decking.
Finally the Forest Dwellings are 2 storey cabins with twice the space of the other 2 categories.
All rooms feature: Teak floors, individualized air conditioning, Telephone and IDD facility, Email & internet access, Mini bar, Tea & coffee making facilities, Large scenic private balcony or terrace, Safety locker, Cable TV with BOSE entertainment system, In –room dining, shower and bath, Slippers and sarongs
Spa
Unlike a lot of Sri Lankan Spas, Vil Uyana is sympathetic to all spa genres around the world. You can take a Swedish Massage, Thai, Aromatherapy, Reflexology and Shiatsu.
There is also a whole section of the menu dedicated to Elemis massage as well as wraps, body scrubs and facials.
This is all before you get the Sri Lankan authentic treatment practice of Ayurveda and the possibilities here are endless, as well as other 3, 4, 5 and 7 days programs of the western variety.
All in all, its the most complete looking treatment menu we’ve seen in Sri Lanka.
Dining
The Apsara is the main restaurant and is teak furnished, naturally cool and has a spectacular view for all day dining. The Sulang is for light bites and drinks and you can watch the variety of birds dip in the lake and enjoy a sip as you do. The Graffiti Bar is air conditioned, with a selection of cigars and light reading material. There is also specialist dining in the Spa, a Kamatha Dining experience (traditional Sri Lankan fare), Cellar Dining and a Parker’s Peak Signature Dining Experience, a must for those outdoor romantics.
Other Facilities & Attractions
Resort swimming pool, boutique shop and DVD Library. Elephant safaris, Sigiriya Rock, the Dambulla cave paintings and Iron Wood Forest are all within touching distance. Further a field you can visit the ancient capital of Polonuwara and Kandy quite easily, and Lake Kandalama is very close by.
Final Word
Vil Uyana is essentially a wetland reserve, situated in reclaimed agricultural territory and allows you to visit one of the most fascinating areas of Sri Lanka, most notably Lion Rock whish is an absolute must.
A more unique set up you will not find and boutique is definitely the word with only 25 rooms spread over a very spacious 24 acre plot.
