Luxury Holidays to Sri Lanka

The thought of a luxury holiday to Sri Lanka conjures up many images and this country has much more to offer than meets the eye. The beauty is that you can discover so much in just one or two visits, although many people come back time and time again because Sri Lanka is so alluring.

Beautiful palm fringed beaches circumvent almost the entire coast (the journey down the west coast is beautiful). Inland you will find lush countryside with paddy fields, jungle, many stunning lakes and 7 world heritage sites. The ancient capitals of the north are fascinating, the tea plantations give a taste of the colonial past and the National Parks are full of wild life including elephants, which you can also see at the famous elephant orphanage near Kandy. This all sits alongside normal everyday Sri Lankan life, with homemade cricket pitches being constructed wherever there is a little space of land, and the friendly people going about their everyday lifes.

Sri Lanka's rich history and culture

A luxury holiday to Sri Lanka wouldn't be complete without a visit to the capital Colombo, the Dutch fort city of Galle (which hosts Elephant Polo in February and a literary Festival in January), and the hill city of Kandy, with its cooler climate, which is another great retreat for those wanting to escape the heat. In August Kandy hosts the world’s largest elephant procession.

The country is rich in history and culture. Buddhism is the main religion here, not least because the Buddha’s tooth is enshrined in Kandy at the Temple of the Tooth. A visit to the world heritage site of Sigiriya (Lion Rock) is also a must; the giant rock rises 200 metres from the plains and houses the remains of a magnificent palace built by King Kasyapa in 5 AD. There is some fascinating history here and an early start to see the sunrise is highly recommended.
